THESEUS CHAN

INVENTORY SHIRT PROJECT — COLLAB N°7

INVENTORY presents the Bespoke Shirt Project: an ongoing initiative where a handful of creatives from different disciplines are invited to reinterpret the classic shirt, and create a bespoke piece that meets their everyday needs. In November, we welcome Theseus Chan, Creative Director & Founder of creative agency WORK, and WERK Magazine.

ABOUT THE ‘THESEUS’

“The idea for this collaboration shirt is to combine 2 different characters into one. To have Inventory’s distinctive bespoke tailoring and yet at the same time something that reflect my daily wardrobe, which are t-shirts. As a result, the sleeves are constructed in Inventory’s signature style and the bodice of the t-shirt hacked from Inventory’s staff t-shirt in soft cotton jersey. The sleeves are attached to the bodice with an exposed seam a technique that echoes my "perfect imperfection" work in printed matter. An embedded parable about shrewdness is silkscreened on the shirt.”

Theseus Chan is a Singaporean transgressive graphic artist and printed matter designer with a keen interest in the visual arts, materials, printing and processing technology. His publication, WERK Magazine has garnered international acclaim for pushing publication design. He was the first Visual Communication designer in Singapore conferred Designer of the Year at the inaugural President's Design Award Singapore in 2006. In 2012, Chan was the first Singaporean designer to have a solo exhibition at the prestigious Ginza Graphic Gallery (ggg) in Tokyo and in 2015, he became the only Singaporean to be elected as member of AGI (Alliance Graphique Internationale). International awards include D&AD Yellow Pencils, New York Art Directors Club (ADC) and the Tokyo TDC Awards. His work is in the permanent collection of Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum in New York, and M+, Museum of Visual Culture in Hong Kong. Some of his collaborators include Comme des Garçons, Louis Vuitton Japan, publisher Gerhard Steidl and artist Keiichi Tanaami.

Limited to 10 pieces, the ‘Theseus’ will be launched on 31 October 2017. All pieces are available on a made-to-measure basis, and will be customized to the customer’s measurements. Customers will be able to make an appointment via the appointment page on INVENTORY’s website to secure the limited edition piece.

In May, we welcome Marilyn Goh & Djohan Hanapi of Knuckles & Notch, a risograph print & publishing studio.

ABOUT THE ‘DJO’

Inspired by the style and functions of vintage railroad and military jackets, Djohan, Creative Director of Knuckles & Notch, wants to create a tough but light utilitarian shirt with plenty of big pockets to store necessities as a replacement to wearing an apron. The long sleeve shirt features a hidden button-down collar, button closure at front, inverted-pleat flap pockets and welt pockets with rivets at edges, with silver hardware throughout.

An exclusive preview of the ‘Djo’ shirt will be held at Gallery & Co. on 20 April 2017, for 2 weeks. Limited to 10 pieces, the ‘Djo’ will be available from 9 May 2017 onwards, on a made-to-measure basis, where all pieces will be customized to the customer’s measurements.

YAH-LENG YU

INVENTORY SHIRT PROJECT — COLLAB N°6

INVENTORY presents the Bespoke Shirt Project: an ongoing initiative where a handful of creatives from different disciplines are invited to reinterpret the classic shirt, and create a bespoke piece that meets their everyday needs. In April, we welcome Yah-Leng Yu, Creative Director & Founder of Foreign Policy Design Group and Gallery & Co.

She has also published and run project initiatives Brand Guide: Singapore Edition, The Swap Show and The Space Program. Her favorite style inspirations come from industrial utility workwear aka Nigel Cabourn and Engineered Garments, Comme des Garçons’ unconventional yet brilliant twist of normal clothes, and the clean well-cut lines of COS.

Limited to 10 pieces. While making an appointment, click on 'The Yah-leng Yu' to secure your piece.

ABOUT THE ‘YAH–LENG YU’

The Inventory x Yah-Leng Yu shirt is best described as a reworked and streamlined version of a typical utility work shirt. The details – elbow patches, patch and slit pockets, and pen loops – are inspired by military and industrial workwear. Utilizing the chambray cotton fabric, this combo is a take on modern workwear with a cleaner more put-together look – an ideal shirt to be worn while getting things done without worrying about sweating through it, especially in our tropical climate.

CHIA WEI CHOONG

INVENTORY SHIRT PROJECT — COLLAB N°5

INVENTORY presents the Bespoke Shirt Project: a new, ongoing initiative where a handful of creatives from different disciplines are invited to reinterpret the classic shirt, and create a bespoke piece that meets their everyday needs. In March, we welcome Fashion Editor, Chia Wei Choong.

Limited to 10 pieces only. While making an appointment, click on 'The Choong' to secure your piece.

ABOUT THE ‘CHOONG’

“The idea was really simple…I just wanted to have a shirt that I would be able to wear while working. I'm always in t-shirt and jeans when I'm out shooting or running errands and comfort is key. It's roomy and boxy but the extended side tabs allow you to change the silhouette slightly by cinching in the waist. I really like pockets, big ones especially because I rarely bring a bag out, it's quite freeing knowing you have everything you need on you.” — Chia Wei Choong

ABOUT THE ‘CLIFFORD’

Black: An absence, the deep blank — but also the depths from which everything emerges. Inspired by Craig Green's minimalist treatment and his investigation of the uniform and utility, the collaborative piece was reinterpreted in a fluid and diaphanous approach. The result is an offbeat and elegant garment which encompasses a crew neck collar, self-fastening straps at sleeves and back, constructed using shirting fabric from Thomas Mason.

The design is built by a three-color silkscreen finish. The font and layering technique reflects a similar style of an earlier t-shirt release— Nikes.
